If you’ve ever spotted rubber ducks perched on a Jeep’s windshield, door handle or bumper, you’ve encountered one of the most heartwarming trends in the automotive world: Jeep ducking, also known as “Duck Duck Jeep.” What started as a single act of kindness has become a worldwide phenomenon.
How Jeep Ducking Began
The Jeep ducking movement traces back to Allison Parliament, a Jeep enthusiast from Ontario, Canada. One day, after experiencing a frightening altercation, Allison decided to lift her own spirits by leaving a small, yellow rubber duck on a Jeep Wrangler she found in a parking lot. That tiny gesture not only helped her find comfort—it also sparked a wave of positivity and camaraderie among Jeep owners around the globe.
Over the past few years, Jeep ducking has reached dozens of countries, with thousands of ducks finding new homes on unsuspecting Jeeps. Sadly, Allison passed away in June of 2024, but her legacy lives on through each good-natured ducking moment.
Why Do Jeeps Get Rubber Ducked?
The motivations can be as unique as each Jeep:
Show Appreciation: Spot a Jeep you admire? Leave a duck to say “I love your ride!”
Share a Smile: The simple surprise of finding a little rubber duck can brighten someone’s entire day.
Community Connection: It’s a way to greet fellow Jeep owners, let them know they’re part of a bigger family, and keep the Jeep spirit alive.“
For me, it was an act of kindness, a healing of sorts, as well as recognition of—and greeting to—a fellow Jeep owner,” Allison once said.
Is Jeep Ducking Only for Wranglers?
Not at all! While Jeep ducking began with a Wrangler owner, any Jeep model can be ducked. From an old-school Jeep Cherokee to a freshly minted Grand Wagoneer, this is about inclusivity and celebration. Some enthusiasts even duck similar off-road-inspired vehicles like Ford Broncos or vintage Land Cruisers. You might even find them on Minis.
How to Duck a Jeep (Politely)
Allison’s approach was always respectful and noninvasive:
Choose a Visible Spot: Place the duck where the owner can easily find it—on the side mirror, door handle, front fender, or bumper.
Avoid the Interior: Don’t open the door or put anything inside the vehicle.
Keep It Kind: A brief note or tag—like “#DuckDuckJeep” or “I love your Jeep!”—adds a personal touch.
Rubber Ducks: Big and Small
Though the classic yellow duck is the tradition’s staple, you’ll find all sorts of creative spins—rhinestone-studded ducks, seasonal ducks, or rubber ducks with mini Jeep decals. Regardless of style, the main goal is spreading kindness, one little duck at a time.
